An American Psalm is a tapestry of family survival on the journey west to California. Part adventure, part flight of fancy - where the Donner Party broke down and failed, Lt. Caldwell and Hannah Belharp, unlikely heroes, assume leadership and lead others to safety from certain death. An American Psalm is a testament of triumph in the face of almost certain defeat.
Traveling west to Californiain 1846, Hanna Belharp loses her husband and son to cholera, leaving her and her ten-year-old daughter Faith alone on the plains, without men or hope. High in theWind River Mountains, Lt. Robert Caldwell survives one of the bloodiest battles ever fought between the Blackfoot and Crow Indians. A sole survivor, he escapes south to the California Trail. Runaway slaves, Tabitha Brown and Jarem Strong, attempt a daring escape across the Missouri River to what they hope will be freedom in the west. Already late in the season, the five join a disparate wagon train of multinational emigrants who are themselves mistakenly following the ill-fated Donner Party. Little do they realize that their fight for survival is just beginning.
